What’s A Water Flosser? What You Need To Know!

Despite the recommendations of the ADA (and the free pack of floss we give you with every dental appointment), most Americans don’t floss. It’s estimated that less than 40% of Americans floss regularly, and 20% of adults never floss.

Learning how to floss correctly takes some time, and some folks simply don’t care to learn. That’s one reason why water flossers are becoming so popular. But is a water flosser better than floss? In this article, the office of Brett Blacher, DDS will take an in-depth look at water flossers and help you find the answer!

What Is A Water Flosser?

A water flosser is a device that uses high-powered streams of water to clean your teeth. This stream of water blasts plaque, food and bacteria from in-between your teeth, providing similar results to traditional dental floss.

The best-known water flosser is the Waterpik, though there are dozens of brands on the market today. Available for around $40-$50, the manufacturers of water flossers claim that their products are just as good as regular floss, or even better!

But is that the truth?

Is A Water Floss Just As Good As Regular Floss?

The short answer is yes! Water flossing has been shown to be very effective at reducing levels of plaque, preventing periodontal disease, and even reducing issues like bleeding gums.

In fact, the Waterpik has earned an official ADA seal of approval. It’s the first water floss device to do so.

The ease-of-use of water floss is one of the primary reasons that it is such an effective teeth cleaning device. Traditional floss can be difficult to use, and many people floss incorrectly, which reduces the effectiveness of flossing.

However, water floss still may not remove quite as much plaque as string floss, so it’s recommended that you use both a water flosser and traditional string floss in your oral hygiene regimen.

Our Recommendation – Water Floss Is Safe And Effective, So Floss Away!

Water flossing is safe and effective, and it’s much better than not flossing at all! If you dislike traditional string floss, water floss is a great alternative.

While water floss is effective for everyday teeth cleaning, it cannot scrape away tough-to-reach plaque in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.
