ADA Approved: Why The ADA’s Seal Of Acceptance Matters!

The American Dental Association (ADA) is the largest dental organization in the United States. It’s also the oldest, tracing its history back to 1859, when it was founded by 26 dentists in Niagara Falls, New York.

Today, the ADA has more than 155,000 members, and is one of the most influential organizations in the world of oral care and dentistry.

You’re probably the most familiar with the ADA because of their “Seal of Acceptance” on oral care products. Since the 1930s, the ADA has established a rigorous set of guidelines for the testing, acceptance, and marketing of dental care products.

The ADA also offers dental accreditation to individual dentists who follow their guidelines and best practices. In this article, Lombard dentist Brett Blacher, DDS will explore what ADA approval is, and why it matters.

ADA Approval Means That You Can Trust A Product – Or A Doctor!

ADA approval is totally voluntary, but over 350 product manufacturers participate in the program. The ADA can be trusted because products submitted to the ADA for approval go through a rigorous set of tests, and must adhere to a strict set of guidelines in order to earn the Seal of Acceptance. These guidelines include:

  • Objective evidence showing efficacy of the product
  • All claims made in marketing and on packaging must be accurate and truthful
  • All advertising and marketing materials must adhere to the ADA’s advertising standards
  • Packaging and labeling must be submitted to the ADA to verify accuracy and truthfulness

Basically, an ADA seal of approval means that any given dental product will be reliable, safe, and high-quality.

The ADA also certifies individual dentists and dental practices. These dental accreditation certificates are similar in some ways to the Seal of Approval.

The ADA will examine the qualifications of an individual dentist and their field of expertise, and grant recognition of competence to any dentist who meets their predetermined qualifications.

These qualifications vary based on the specialty of the dentist in question. However, you can be sure that any dentist who has been certified by the ADA will deliver fantastic service.

In general, you should always try to use dental products that have the ADA’s Seal of Approval, and choose dentists who meet the qualifications for ADA certifications.
