Can Gum Health Affect Your Heart Health?

Often, people don’t think of oral care as something that affects their overall well-being. But recent studies have suggested that poor oral hygiene can actually lead to a number of other diseases – including an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

In this article, the office of Brett Blacher, DDS will examine the link between gum health and heart health, and discuss how periodontal disease may increase your risk of serious heart conditions.

Periodontitis and Its Link To Heart Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis or gum disease, was revealed to have a link to an increased risk of heart disease in a 2010 study. This study examined patients with advanced periodontal disease, and concluded that they had a much higher risk of cardiovascular issues.

How is this possible? First, you need to understand periodontitis. Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that builds up on the gums and between the teeth. This hardens into plaque and tartar over time. As your gums fight back against bacterial infection, they become inflamed, tender, and red.

Inflammation is key here. Your gums are full of incredibly small veins and capillaries. As inflammation spreads throughout your gums, it’s thought that bacteria can enter your bloodstream through them. In turn, this can cause inflammation elsewhere in the body.

This can cause a condition that’s known as “atherosclerosis”, the hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis and inflammation are thought to be the primary links between gum disease and increased risk of heart disease.

Lifestyle Factors Could Also Increase the Risk Of Heart Disease

Generally, severe periodontitis is found mostly in individuals with sub-par health habits. Many people with periodontal disease neglect their oral health, and also suffer from other lifestyle-related health issues like diabetes.

They may also have a poor diet, or use tobacco or alcohol excessively. All of these factors can increase the risk of developing both periodontal disease and heart disease, which could be another factor in the link between heart health and periodontal disease.
