When Should I Consider Dental Implants? What You Should Know

If you’re thinking about restoring your smile in Lombard, Dr. Brett Blacher is here to help. At the office of Dr. Brett Blacher, we specialize in dental implant placement and restoration. But you may not be sure if dental implants are right for you.

Wondering if you should consider implants to permanently restore your smile? In this blog, we’ll discuss a few situations when you should definitely be considering dental implants from Dr. Blacher.

1.To Restore Your Smile If You’re Missing One Or More Teeth

If you have lost one or more teeth due to an oral injury, or due to tooth decay or gum disease, a dental implant is the best way to restore your smile. You can use multiple single-tooth implants to replace your teeth, or even get implant-supported bridges or dentures if you are missing a lot of teeth.

It’s best to get implants as soon as you can after losing a tooth, too. Your jaw bone weakens after tooth loss. Even just a year after losing a tooth, you can lose up to 25% of your jaw bone.

If you get implants right away, you can preserve your jaw bone. But if you wait too long, you may need additional surgical treatments like bone grafting or a sinus lift to get a dental implant.

2.To Replace A Damaged Tooth After It’s Been Extracted

In some cases, you may have a tooth that’s been severely damaged by an oral injury, or has an extensive infection or cavity that can’t be treated with a root canal or dental crown. If this is the case, it may need to be extracted.

If this happens, the best thing to do is to have an implant placed as soon as you heal from the extraction process. This way, you can completely restore your smile within 3-6 months of losing your tooth. And since implants last 30+ years and require no special care beyond brushing and flossing, you’ll enjoy a beautiful smile for decades to come.

3.To Replace A Partial Denture Or Dental Bridge

If you have had a partial denture or even a dental bridge to restore one or more missing teeth, it may be possible to replace these prostheses with one or more dental implants. However, you may need a bone graft or sinus lift to strengthen your jaw if you have had a bridge or a denture for multiple years.

4.To Prevent Jaw Bone Loss & Deterioration

This is the best reason to consider dental implants. Unlike bridges and dentures, dental implants completely prevent jaw bone loss after you lose one or more teeth. The implant stimulates the bone tissue below your gums, which stops it from deteriorating.

Over time, jaw bone loss can weaken your jaw and cause a “sunken” appearance. But with dental implants, you can completely avoid this issue, and keep your smile and jaw healthy.
