3 Surprising Benefits Of Invisalign (That You May Not Know About)

Invisalign is one of the best ways to correct minor cosmetic and orthodontic issues among older teens and adults for a number of reasons. You probably already know that Invisalign clear aligners are nearly invisible, and that the average treatment time is much lower than traditional metal braces.

Along with these obvious benefits, the Dr. Blacher and the team at at Brett Blacher, DDS want our patients to know about the other surprising perks. If you’re interested in a straighter smile and convenient treatment, here’s a few things you should know about Invisalign:

1. Invisalign Means You Spend Less Time At The Dentist’s Office

One thing that many people don’t realize about Invisalign is that you don’t have to visit your dentist nearly as often as you would if you had traditional braces. At each dental appointment, you’ll usually be given 3 sets of aligners. You’ll take these home and swap them out every two weeks, and you won’t need to visit our office again for six weeks.

Every six weeks, you’ll come back in for a quick check-up to make sure things are progressing properly, and Dr. Blacher will give you your next several sets of aligners.

In contrast, you usually have to spend 1-2 hours at the dentist every 2 weeks if you have traditional braces in order to have them adjusted. Since the average treatment time for traditional braces is two years, this means that you would be spending 200 hours in the dentist’s chair.

2. Invisalign Makes It More Convenient (And Safe) To Play Contact Sports

Playing contact sports with braces can be a dicey proposition. At the very least, you will need a custom mouthguard to make sure that your braces are kept safe and intact, and the sharp metal of braces can cause serious oral damage if you’re hit.

In contrast, you can usually use your old mouthguard with Invisalign, because you can remove your aligners before you start playing. And because there’s no metal or wires in your mouth, your risk of oral injury is reduced. Whether you love hockey, soccer, football, or even MMA, Invisalign is an ideal choice.

3. Invisalign Can Help Reduce Snacking (And Consumption Of Soda)

Here’s the most surprising fact about Invisalign: Patients who have used Invisalign clear aligners often report losing some weight while they’re wearing their aligners.

Why? Because Invisalign must be removed before you eat, or drink anything other than water. In addition, it’s best to brush your teeth immediately after eating, to destroy oral bacteria.

This means that it can take several minutes to clean and replace your aligners after eating. Because of this, many Invisalign patients think twice before they grab a bag of chips from the pantry, or a soda from the fridge.

For best results, you need to wear your aligners for 22 hours or more per day. Many patients have said that sticking to this guideline has made them less likely to snack or drink unhealthy beverages like soda.
